CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Hallie waited for a chance to see Josh and Brandon, hoping to catch them together. The first time she saw them without other people around was on Sunday. They were leaning against Brandon’s car in the church parking lot, observing the goings-on and no doubt gaining ammunition for their cynical conversations. However, this Sunday they didn’t seem to be watching. They looked to be having a serious discussion. They stopped talking as soon as Hallie approached, both becoming obviously tense.

“I came to apologize.” She spoke quickly, to put them at ease. “I said some things the other day that I regret.”

“Regret? Because they weren’t true, or because they might be hurtful?”

Hallie couldn’t face Josh’s direct blue eyes. Yep. Still intelligent. Too much so. She ignored his question. “I was ungracious. But I forgive you and hope you will forgive me for the things I said.”

She rushed away, unable to handle anything else they might say.

She’d kidded herself that she was strong and in control. Brandon hadn’t been the only one who was acting. But instead of impressing people or drawing them to God, it repelled them. Made them feel inferior.

Take my fear, Lord Jesus, and help me always be real. Never let my heart deceive me again.

For a long time, she had refused to accept and feel her emotions. Self-control and goodness had been her protection, performed in her own strength. But it had shut out other fruit of the Spirit she so desperately craved. Like love. And joy.

Oh Lord, give me the fruit of your Spirit. Fill me. Overflow me. Teach me how to live and love.
